The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has received a request for a resolution for a proposed Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Store Licence. The applicant intendsto establish a provincially licensed store within an existing building on property located at 2414 Island Highway East. The subject property is currently zoned Commercial 5 (CM5) in "Regional District of Nanaimo Land Use and Subdivision Bylaw No. 500, 1987" (Bylaw 500).
The legal sale of cannabis is considered a retail use and is permitted as a 'Tourist Store' the CM5 zoning that applies to the property (see Document Library). In order to proceed with the Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Store, the applicant has requested a resolution of support from the Regional Board to be provided to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch as part of the ongoing application process with the Province.

The Provincial license requires a resolution from local government. Public feedback on this application will be presented to the RDN Board for consideration of a resolution which will be forwarded to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch. A virtual public meeting for the application will be held on Monday March 28, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. For other opportunities to provide input, check the start a discussion tab on this website to provide your comments in a public forum.

The RDN resolution will be provided to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch whether to approve or not approve the application. The resolution may also reflect conditions for the approval of a cannabis retail store (such as hours of operation).
