The Impact Of Traveling For Treatment-A Patient Journey
Danika and Nick Clark bravely share their personal journey about having to travel to Vancouver to receive cancer radiation treatment. Their story highlights the critical need for healthcare facilities, that offer specialized treatment for patients, to be available to Central and North Island residents closer to home. Receiving treatment closer to the patient's home and family lessons patients health and financial burdens during treatment and recovery. The Nanaimo Regional Hospital District is committed to working in partnership with the B.C. Government to fund critically needed healthcare facilities in the region.
A Health Journey: The Importance of Community
If you were recovering from a health issue, would you want to be able to be able to recover in your own home and community?
Currently patients who experience a heart health issue, and live in the Central and North Vancouver Island, may have to travel to Victoria or Vancouver to receive specialized care which is not currently available at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). In this segment, Chief Michael Recalma and Sharon Recalma, Qualicum First Nation, share their own personal experience with having to travel to Victoria for heart-related health care that is not currently available at NRGH. They also share how healing at home surrounded by the community was an important component of a successful recovery.
Investing in Healthcare Facilities: Benefits to the Region
In this segment Tony Harris, Board Chair of the Nanaimo & District Hospital District and business owner, shares insights on how improving healthcare facilities, such as building a new patient tower and cardiac catheterization lab at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, would benefit regional communities for years to come.
Improving Patient Care with a New Patient Tower and Cardiac Catheterization Lab at NRGH
In this video segment, Dr. David Coupland, Chair for the Nanaimo Medical Staff Engagement Society (NMSES), shares why a new patient tower and cardiac catheterization lab is so important not only for providing quality care to patients but also to supply medical staff the facility and tools needed to care for their patients.
The Nanaimo Regional Hospital District, in partnership with other advocacy groups is urging the B.C. Government to support and commit to cost sharing for a new patient tower and cardiac catheterization lab at NRGH.
Working together to advocate for improved health care
The NRHD works collaboratively with the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. While the NRHD is a funding partner with the B.C. Government for capital healthcare facility projects in the region, the Foundation raises money for Island Health initiatives, facilities and equipment that provides innovative healthcare for regional communities.
In this video segment, Barney Ellis-Perry, Chief Executive Officer for the Foundation, shares why collaborative community advocacy is so important. He also highlights the financial, mental and physical health impacts that patients may experience when having to travel for specialized treatment that should be available at NRGH.
The NRHD is committed to advocating for critically needed healthcare facilities in the region.
