The RDN is currently looking for your input on application PL2020-095.

2260 Alberni Highway, Coombs

The public engagement period has concluded. Thank you to all for your participation.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has received a request for a resolution for a proposed Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Store Licence. The applicant intends to establish a provincially licensed store within an existing building on property located at 2260 Alberni Highway in Coombs. The subject property is currently zoned Commercial 2 (C-2) in "Regional District of Nanaimo Electoral Area F Zoning and Subdivision Bylaw No. 1285, 2002" (Bylaw 1285).

The legal sale of cannabis is considered a retail use and the existing C-2 zoning on the property includes 'Retail Store' as a permitted principal use (see Document Library). In order to proceed with the Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Store, the applicant has requested a resolution of support from the Regional Board to be provided to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch as part of the ongoing application process with the Province.

  • Share The application suggests support from the Arrowsmith Agriculture Association based on the letter from the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association wrote in support of myself and Coombs Cannabis. The letter was specific to a working relationship we/Coombs Cannabis had made with the board. Can you verify the support from the Arrowsmith board for the new application? The applicant is emphatic the there is "No concerns with respect to the proposed NMC retail store at 2260 Alberni Highway" I suggest there is no support for the application by the board of the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association. The picture that is part of this application have deleted the Entrance sign to the Fair Grounds which are at the entrance to the proposed store, I find it misleading, is it possible to get a picture that represents the true nature of the entrance to the store and the rear entrance to the fair grounds. It would provide a better picture for the area residence to help in their decision. The illegal cannabis store that operates from the same address as the proposed new store currently uses fair ground property without approval or compensation to the Fair Grounds, has the RDN check to verify the relationship between the Fair grounds and the applicants? There is lots of suggestions of support but no substance. The applicant suggests that there is no regular events for youth at Arrowsmith Hall is not true, there is basketball every Tuesday and Thursday nights for area youths. Good morning. Thank you for your inquiries. At this time, the subject application has not received any support from the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association. A recently taken photo has been added to the GetInvolved page showing the existing  building entrance to the proposed non-medical cannabis retail store. The relationship between the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association and the current property tenants/owner is a civil matter outside of the Regional District of Nanaimo's jurisdiction. The Regional District of Nanaimo reviews applications submitted and provides a report to the Regional District of Nanaimo Board for their consideration. To have your comments or questions submitted to the Regional District of Nanaimo Board for Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Licence Application No. PL2020-95, please submit a letter by mail to the Regional District of Nanaimo Planning Department located at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, BC V9T 6N2 referencing Application No. PL2020-095 to the attention of Nicholas Redpath, or by email to nredpath@rdn.bc.ca by 4:30 pm on Friday, October 30, 2020.

Good morning and thank you for your question relating to parking. The proposed Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Store is to be serviced by on-site parking located at the rear of the property. The Ministry of Transportation has indicated that though it is not prohibited, the Ministry does not endorse roadside parking.
